Opel Astra wins Car Of The Year

The Opel Astra was crowned the Wesbank Car of the year on Wednesday, 15 March.

It is the fourth time that Opel managed to walk home with this prestigious award after it had a real golden patch with three victories in the 90’s. The new Astra is an exceptional vehicle and the built quality, which speaks of real German Excellence and has ensured that South Africa is the 13th country where the Astra has been crowned as Car of the Year.

It is also the reigning European Car of the Year and it is hard to imagine why the brand is treated as General Motors’ step child. Opel has now officially been sold to Peugeot, but the new owners will do well not to tamper with the Astra. Over the past three years Opel sales in South Africa have grown by 9,5% despite a general decline of 15,5% in our overall vehicle market.
